NIGERIA DATA PROTECTION COMMISSION

….Championing Privacy Rights

Leading Nigeria's Data Protection Journey

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), established through the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) signed on June 12, 2023, is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital privacy landscape. It upholds the right to privacy for Nigerian citizens and residents, complementing existing laws such as Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), among others.

The NDP Act aligns Nigeria with global and regional data protection standards, including the ECOWAS Supplementary Act, which urges each member state to establish a Data Protection Authority. Through this act, Nigeria aims to protect personal data, enhance privacy rights, and support the development of a secure digital economy.
